"Hospice" was originally a medieval term for place where travelers could go to find shelter. Today, FRIENDS of Caroline HOSPICE is a totally non-profit, tax-exempt organization that also provides "shelter for those who are traveling through the last stages of their lives.

Hospice offers an alternative to hospital and nursing home care for those who are dying, and support for their family and friends as well. FRIENDS
of Caroline HOSPICE was formed in order to bring the individuals needed to provide this supportive care together as a coordinated and unified team.

Members of our Coordinated Care Team and the services provided include:

• The patient's private physician to provide medical care, monitor pain medications, and assist with medical equipment.

• RN's to coordinate patient care.

• The patient's clergy to provide spiritual comfort.

• Personal Care Assistants to provide physical assistance and supportive services.

  • Volunteers of FRIENDS of Caroline HOSPICE to provide support and respite.

  • On-call assistance at any hour (24 hours, 7 days).

  • Equipment and supplies, at no charge, to help a family care for their loved one.

  • Pain and nausea medicine for patients who cannot afford these medications.

  • In addition to offering a Coordinated Care Team to work with the patient and family members, the following support groups and services are offered:

    • Bereavement services and support groups to bring comfort to those who are caregivers and those who grieve.

    • Cancer support groups to help patients learn how to deal with a diagnosis of cancer and with cancer treatment.

    • A Bereavement Support Team for Children to help young people cope with the death of a loved one and to offer reassurance and support.

    • Bereavement Support for Parents Grieving the Loss of a Baby, either before or after birth.

    • Caregiver Sessions aimed at helping the primary caregiver provide the best care possible for the patient.
